CVU gymnastics in championships Saturday

Once again this winter, the end of the gymnastics season takes place at Essex High Saturday with the annual favored Essex High Hornets as strong as ever.

However, Champlain Valley Union High’s team of gymnasts has come close to unseating the Hornets in recent years, two years ago bowing by fractions of a point.

This season, Essex won the annual regular season match by several points over the Redhawks but once the competition begins, it’s a new day.

Coach Bob Abbott’s Red and White girls prepared for the Big One last Wednesday with a 126.45 to 114.85 victory over visiting St. Johnsbury Academy at Green Mountain Gymnastics in Williston.

Senior Sarah Kinsley gave CVU a win in floor exercise and took second on the uneven bars.

Taylor Underwood, also a CVU senior, tied for first with the Hilltoppers’ Mariah Adam on the vault and tied for second on the balance beam.
