CVU field hockey still atop power rankings

October 10, 2013

Rained out of their makeup game at Burlington High Monday, the number one ranked Champlain Valley Union High field hockey team (6-1-2) got back in action Wednesday afternoon at Colchester High, after the Observer’s press deadline.

Coach Kate McDonald’s Redhawks return to the hills of home Friday for a 3:45 p.m. tussle with South Burlington High. The defending Division 1 champion Rebels took a 5-3-2 record into this week with one of those victories a 3-2 nipping of the ‘Hawks on the Rebs’ turf.

This past Saturday, the Redhawks and second ranked 6-1-3 Essex High fought to a scoreless deadlock at the Essex field.

While the Hornets controlled the action by living in front of the CVU cage, Redhawks’ goalie Evangeline Dunphy controlled the Hornets, blocking and kicking out some 21 shots in the tense, overtime tilt.

The spectacular performance would put Dunphy at the head of the list for Busy Person of the Week, if there were such an award.

Essex goalie Maria Grant was credited with a single save.
