CVU defender helps Vermont to Shrine Bowl win

Champlain Valley Union High School’s Jacob Bortnick helped Vermont to a 24-13 win over New Hampshire in the 65th annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl on Saturday night at Castleton University.

Bortnick had eight tackles and helped to lead a defensive effort that limited the Granite State offense to just 51 yards on the ground and 209 total yards of offense.

With the victory, Vermont has now won the last three over New Hampshire and has closed the lead in the series to 47-16-2.

Burr and Burton’s Jay McCoy led the Green Mountain State’s offense with two touchdowns — an interception returned for a TD in the first half and a 10-yard run in the second. Windsor’s Seth Balch, who started at quarterback for Vermont, also scored two touchdowns for the home team.

Balch and Hartford’s Tyler Hamilton paced the Vermont ground game, and Missisquoi’s Hunter Nunes-Wales added three tackles and a sack to an impressive defensive performance.
