Last Monday night, CVU’s Redhawks put away the 2015 State Champion Essex Hornets in their first match-up of the 2016 boy’s volleyball season. They came away with a solid win over four sets, breaking the Hornets’ four-season winning streak. ”This was a big win as Essex is a strong team and we beat them on their home court,” said Jeff Boliba, the coach.

The Sept. 19 game was the first official meeting of Essex and CVU since the 2015 State Championship, in which the Hornets beat the Redhawks to take the state title.

This time, CVU prevailed 25 to 21 in the opening set, led off by starters Kevin Devine, Noah Allen, Jacob Boliba, Jeffery Boliba, Spencer Snipes, Storm Rushford and libero Baker Angstman.

In the second set, Essex came back strong and took an 8-point lead. The Redhawks struggled to close the gap, but the Hornets held on to win with a score of 25 to 15.

CVU responded heartily with a 25 to 13 win in set three, thanks to the solid serving of freshman Jacob Boliba, protection at the net by senior Elias Sturim and repeated spike attacks by senior Kevin Devine.

The fourth set was a do or die match for Essex, but the Redhawks climbed to a 10 pt lead thanks in part to solid serving from freshman Baker Angstman. Devine scored the winning point to close the set and call the match for the Redhawks with a 25 to 14 win. The final score  was 3 for CVU, 1 for Essex.

The action continued when CVU trumped Enosburg Falls this week, with a 3 to 1 win at home.

They went on to beat Lyndon Institute 3-0 on Tuesday, with Elias Sturim leading the team in ace serves and Storm Rushford setting a great match.

CVU is undefeated this season with 5 wins. For more information about boy’s volleyball, visit http://www.vpaonline.org
