After picking off one serious foe Tuesday, the Champlain Valley Union High boys soccer team faces another difficult opponent with high ambitions Friday when 8-1-1 Mount Mansfield Union pops into Hinesburg at 4 p.m.

CVU nipped 8-2-1 Colchester High 1-0 Tuesday on Tucker Shelley’s goal, while Mount Mansfield laid a 5-1 licking on North Country Union.

The Redhawks (10-1) fired 11 shots on the Colchester cage while CVU goalie Brandon O’Connell had three stops.

It was the third straight victory for the ‘Hawks, who were restored to first place in the state power rankings after previously unbeaten St. Johnsbury Academy—the Hilltoppers edged CVU 2-1 recently—got toppled 4-2 Tuesday at Essex High, the Hornets now fourth in the rankings.

Last Saturday, CVU bumped off North Country Union 4-1 in Newport. Nolan Jimmo launched a pair of goals while Richard Baccei and Cooper O’Connell also scored.

Last Wednesday, it was Baccei with the victory-giving goal and Cooper O”Connell with the big assist as the Redhawks nudged past visiting South Burlington High 1-0.

Brandon O’Connell had an unusually busy seven-save day in the CVU nets.

I take frequent walks in my neighborhood and surrounding sidewalks/roads on Industrial Avenue and Rt 2-A and occasionally see what appears to be a dog-poop bag, nicely tied, but simply left there in the road or on the sidewalk. I would like to remind dog-walkers that this is not appropriate. Please carry it off.
