Construction to begin Monday at Richmond park and ride

August 22, 2013

Reconstruction on the Richmond park and ride is set to begin Aug. 26, and space will be limited until the project’s completion nearly a year from now.

Tatro Construction Inc. will add 53 parking spaces and resurface the pavement, for a total of 158 spaces. The company is also set to add drainage, lighting, signs, new medians and curbing, a traffic circle and a bus shelter. It will also construct a new entrance and traffic signal at park and ride entrance, U.S. Route 2 and the Interstate 89 southbound exit ramp. It will also replace the light at U.S. Route 2 and Vt. Route 117.

The project is expected to be completed June 26, 2014.

Gov. Peter Shumlin announced the approximately $1 million expansion project in May. The expansion is part of a larger project to encourage public transportation use and carpooling, adding a total of 500 spaces to Vermont park and ride lots.

I am writing in response to Mr. Hoxworth’s article on transportation costs for the poor in Vermont. I would like to suggest further research on this topic before we simply just give another handout or tax credit. The poor, may, have a higher disproportionate burden on their transportation costs than the wealthier residents of Vermont; however, they also have a lower disproportionate burden on taxes and housing. Pick your evil.
We can simply just give every poor Vermonter an energy efficient car, gas card, free tuition, renter’s rebate, etc.…but the only way out of poverty is through the combination of education, hard work, and discipline. Education and degrees are not handed out or purchased; a person has to EARN them. This seems to be the only way out of poverty—sorry, there are no shortcuts.
If we continue this trend of enabling, our entire state will be a welfare state.
