Champlain Valley Union High’s Ashley Bachand competes on the balance beam during Friday’s gymnastics meet against Essex High School.
The Redhawks took on the defending champion Hornets at their home digs last Friday in what co-coach Rachel Miller described as “a decent meet, but not our strongest.”
There were no wins for CVU in the four events, but Ashley Bachand took second to Essex’s Kimmy Dirmaier on the vault, scoring a 9.3 to Dirmaier’s 9.4.
“That was one of Ashley’s best performances,” Miller said, recalling that Bachand might have had a previous 9.4 to her credit.
Bachand also came in third in floor exercise and fourth to the winning Dirmaier in the all-around.
“Essex is very strong this year,” Miller said of the Hornets.
The Redhawks, second last year in the states, are hoping to improve this time around.
