Wastewater plant recognized for energy generation

The Essex Junction Wastewater Treatment Facility was recently awarded the 2018 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.

The facility treats wastewater from Williston and Essex.

The award recognizes actions taken by Vermonters to conserve and protect natural resources, prevent pollution and promote environmental sustainability.

The facility received the award for its energy conservation and alternative energy efforts.

Wastewater treatment facilities run 24/7 and are among the top ten largest energy users nationwide. By implementing energy efficiency measures, such as installing a 150 kW solar field and 150 kW methane cogeneration system, the Essex Junction Wastewater Treatment Facility now generates about half of its annual energy needs on site.
