Supple and Bolger outduel Barre aces
May 7, 2009
In a repeat of the 2007 Vermont Senior Baseball League championship game, the Williston Armadillos played their home opener on Sunday against the Barre Brewers. The game lived up to its potential, as the Dillos prevailed in a pitchers’ duel, 3-2, in 10 innings. With the win, the Armadillos improved their record to 2-0.
Starting pitcher Bill Supple went six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out three. Reliever Greg Bolger shut out the Brewers over the final four innings, picking up the victory to improve his record to 2-0. Bolger gave up just two hits and two walks while striking out three. Offensively, nine of the 12 Dillos hit safely as the team rapped out 13 hits.
The Armadillos jumped out to 1-0 lead in the first inning. Supple (2-4) singled, moved to second when Bolger (0-4, 1 run) grounded to short and the Brewer’s second baseman dropped the throw at second, and scored on Pookie Martin’s (2-4, RBI) single.
In a stark turnaround from the prior week’s defensive lapses, the Armadillos thereafter turned several defensive gems to hold the Brewers at bay. Following a leadoff double in the second inning, on two successive batters, third baseman Martin dove to stop what otherwise would have been a hit to left, checked the runner back to second and threw out the batter.
In the fourth, after another leadoff double, left fielder Brian Donahue (1-4, RBI), making his Armadillo debut, retrieved a shot over his head and relayed a throw to shortstop Bolger, who threw a shot to catcher Darby Crum in time for him to tag out the runner from second trying to score. As the batter took second on the throw home, the Brewers tied the game when the next batter singled.
The Brewers took the lead 2-1 in the sixth on a double and two singles and threatened in the seventh. After the Brewers loaded the bases with one out, Bolger struck out the next two batters to hold the Brewers at bay.
The Dillos knotted the score 2-2 in the seventh. Left fielder Dann Van der Vliet (1-3, BB, 1 run) walked and scored when second baseman Pete Picard (3-4, 3B, RBI) drilled a triple down the line in right.
The Dillos would have taken the lead in the bottom of the eighth but for some baseball magic running in favor of the Brewers. After center fielder Ray Danis (1-4) struck out, catcher Billy Daw (1-4, 2B) doubled and moved to third when Donahue reached on an error. Supple then drilled a shot up the middle. The ball, however, hit the pitcher’s foot and careened to the second baseman, leading to a 4-6-3 double play, stranding Daw at third.
The Dillos scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. Picard singled and took second when the Brewer’s third baseman committed an error, allowing catcher Darby Crum (0-4) to reach base. Daw grounded to short and, after a force out at second, beat the throw to first, moving Picard to third. Donahue then singled up the middle to score Picard with the winner.
Next week, the Dillos are off for Mother’s Day. On May 17, they will play the 0-2 Bolton Bombers at Maple Park in Essex. Game time is noon. League standings and results can be found at www.scorebook.com.
